Новосильский (1800-1862) родился в дворянской семье, в 1819 г. закончил Морской кадетский корпус в звании мичмана. В своих записках он пишет, что был одним из многих желающих участвовать в антарктической экспедиции. По просьбе отца, который был несколько знаком с Лазаревым, командир шлюпа «Мирного» взял его к себе на корабль уже в самый последний момент.
